The character of the place

Why stay here

71 rooms in a 1953 state guesthouse at 319 Dongxin Street, converted by Accor and reopened as a Sofitel Legend in 2014. The building is Soviet-influenced civic architecture with French and Chinese detailing, high ceilings, heavy mouldings and Art Deco fittings, set in its own walled garden with a central water feature. It keeps a small museum of the building's own history.

The only hotel in Xi'an that is itself a historic building rather than a tower with Tang motifs applied. 71 rooms in a compound this size means an unusual amount of space per guest, and the garden is genuinely old. Inside the city wall, in the Xincheng government quarter, so the Bell Tower and Muslim Quarter are a short drive rather than a cross-town run.

Make the stay your own

Rooms worth asking for

A Grand Room or Chang'an suite with a garden view and balcony. The whole case for this hotel is the compound, and a room facing the street or the car court wastes it.

Note the exact room or suite name before opening the booking provider, along with any connecting-room, step-free access or celebration requests.

At the table

Dining & the evening ahead

KOI (Japanese), Dolce Vita (Italian), and the 1953 Lobby Bar for afternoon tea. No Chinese fine-dining room of note, which is a real gap in Xi'an.

Request restaurant availability alongside your stay. Tasting menus, private dining and dietary arrangements should be confirmed separately.

Time for yourself

Spa, pool & wellbeing

A spa, massage rooms and beauty centre exist but I found no account suggesting the spa is a reason to book.

Ask which facilities are included with your room, whether treatments require advance reservations, and whether any seasonal closures affect your stay.

Before you decide

The 2014 conversion is now over a decade old and guest feedback repeatedly flags inconsistent and slow service, cleanliness lapses and poor value at the rates charged; one reviewer called the rooms cramped, which for a heritage conversion is plausible since the original floorplate was not built for en-suite bathrooms. Room sizes are quoted differently on different booking platforms. There is no serious Chinese restaurant, which in the former Chang'an is an odd omission.

Location. Xincheng District, inside the city wall on Dongxin Street, in the provincial government quarter near Revolution Park.
