A taste of Chongqing

Duo Yi Jia Guzhen Ji Za

多一家古镇鸡杂

A cheap, loud dry-pot specialist on the main street of Ciqikou old town, serving 鸡杂 - chicken gizzard, heart and intestine stir-fried hard with pickled chilli, pickled radish and garlic shoots. It is the best thing to eat in a quarter otherwise given over to souvenir snacks, and it is a good demonstration of 江湖菜, the blunt, chilli-heavy river-and-road cooking Chongqing invented.

Why come here

A place worth making time for

Selected into China Southern Airlines' official Chongqing food guide as the pick of Ciqikou's chicken-offal dry pots; no award confirmed from a primary source.

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Old-town chicken offal dry pot (古镇鸡杂)
  • Chicken offal with pickled radish (泡萝卜鸡杂)
  • Rice in the pot juices (锅巴饭 / 米饭)

What it actually tastes like

This is offal cooked dry rather than boiled: gizzard and intestine, chewy and strongly flavoured, with sour-hot pickled chilli and a lot of oil. Pickle funk plus chilli plus 花椒. Order rice; you will need it.

Allergens in this kitchen

soygluten/wheatsesame

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
