A taste of Chongqing

Hao You Lai Suan La Fen

好又来酸辣粉

A hole in the wall on Bayi Road's 'Good Eats Street' that sells one thing - hot and sour sweet-potato noodles - and sells it all day to a permanent queue. There is no dining room and essentially nowhere to sit; you take the bowl and eat it standing on the street. For under fifteen yuan it is the most efficient introduction to Chongqing snacking there is.

Why come here

A place worth making time for

The reference shop for Chongqing 酸辣粉, listed in both Ctrip's and China Southern's official city food guides; no award confirmed from a primary source.

The house favourites

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Hot and sour sweet-potato noodles (酸辣粉)
  • Hot and sour noodles with minced pork sauce (肉酱酸辣粉)

What it actually tastes like

Very sharp black-vinegar sourness on top of chilli and 花椒, with crushed peanut, spring onion and coriander. The noodles are slippery and almost rubbery - that springy texture is intentional. Sour and numbing at the same time surprises most first-timers more than the heat does.

Allergens in this kitchen

peanutsoygluten/wheatsesame

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
