A taste of Chongqing

Qin Yun Lao Taipo Tantan Mian

秦云老太婆摊摊面(全国总店)

The original shop of a xiaomian name that has since spread across China, run out of Jiulongpo. 'Tantan mian' means stall noodles - the trade used to be done from a shoulder pole and a street burner, and the shop keeps that register: stand, slurp, leave. It is the other half of the Chongqing breakfast argument alongside Huashi.

Why come here

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Chongqing xiaomian, two liang (重庆小面 二两)
  • Pea and pork-sauce noodles (豌杂面)
  • Beef noodles (牛肉面)

What it actually tastes like

Chilli oil, 花椒, garlic water, preserved mustard stem and often peanut; the numbness is the part visitors are not ready for. Portions are sold by liang, not by bowl size in words.

Allergens in this kitchen

gluten/wheatsoysesamepeanut

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
