A taste of Chongqing

Shancheng Budao Lao Huoguo

山城步道老火锅

A cheap, unpretentious old-style hotpot in Nanping on the south bank, listed in China Southern Airlines' own Chongqing eating guide as one of the city's representative pots. Red oil to the brim and a mound of dried chilli on top, at a price locals actually pay rather than a tourist-strip price. Useful if you want the real thing without a Jiefangbei queue.

¥66 per person≈ US$9.83Nanping, Nan'an district, 3 Jinshan Road (annex 10). Metro station not confirmed. Open roughly 09:00-00:00.

Why come here

A place worth making time for

Selected into China Southern Airlines' official Chongqing food guide as a representative local old hotpot; no competitive award confirmed.

The house favourites

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Beef tripe (毛肚)
  • Duck intestine (鸭肠)
  • Duck blood curd (鸭血)
  • Hand-made sweet-potato sheet (苕皮)

What it actually tastes like

Pure red oil with the chilli left visible - aggressive 麻辣, very oily, offal-led. Old houses at this price point generally will not make you a clear broth, so decide before you sit down whether you can take it.

Allergens in this kitchen

sesamesoygluten/wheatpeanut

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
