A taste of Datong

Xiaoxifu Cold Jelly (Hunyuan branch)

小媳妇凉粉(浑源店)

Hunyuan county, an hour from Datong and the gateway to the Hanging Monastery and Mount Heng, is where the region's famous cold potato-starch jelly comes from. This is the best-known shop in the county town, and the natural lunch stop on a Hanging Monastery day trip rather than a Datong city address.

Why come here

A place worth making time for

The most-recommended liangfen shop in Hunyuan, the dish's home county, on Chinese travel platforms; no formal award.

The house favourites

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Hunyuan cold potato-starch jelly (浑源凉粉)
  • Aged-stock rabbit head (兔头)
  • Fried tofu cubes in the jelly bowl (豆腐干)

What it actually tastes like

Served genuinely cold, even in winter, dressed with garlic water, chilli oil and a lot of vinegar, with crisp fried pea-starch nuggets on top. The texture is slippery and gelatinous, which divides people.

Allergens in this kitchen

soysesamegluten/wheatpeanut

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
