A taste of Guangzhou

Xin Ji Seafood Restaurant

信记海鲜饭店

A decades-old dai pai dong-style seafood restaurant on the Pearl River waterfront, reported as the only Michelin-starred street-stall-style place in Guangzhou. Opened in the early 1980s, it keeps a fish tank at the door and Lingnan-style decor. It is a rare chance to eat a starred meal at mid-range prices, but be aware the place is busy and cooking to order can be slow.

Why come here

A place worth making time for

Michelin one star (first awarded in 2022, retained in 2026).

The house favourites

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Eel braised with roast pork (红烧白鳗 / 烧腩焖白鳝)
  • Swamp eel rice cooked to order (黄鳝饭)
  • Live seafood from the tank, steamed or fried (时令海鲜)

What it actually tastes like

Eel is the speciality: fatty, firm, served with bones and skin. Swamp eel rice takes a long time because it is cooked to order. Live tank seafood is priced by weight, so ask the price before they weigh it.

Allergens in this kitchen

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
