A taste of Guangzhou

Yin Ji Changfen

银记肠粉

A long-established Guangzhou rice-roll and congee shop and a standard cheap breakfast stop. Rice rolls (肠粉) are made to order, and 生滚粥 is congee boiled fresh in the pot and served scalding, so let it cool. It is a cheap, quick meal, and a good counterweight to the pricier restaurants.

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Shrimp and beef rice rolls (鲜虾牛肉肠)
  • Fish-slice congee (鱼片粥)
  • Imperial exam congee (及第粥)
  • Century egg and lean pork congee (皮蛋瘦肉粥)

What it actually tastes like

Congee often contains pork liver, kidney or intestine (及第粥), and century egg (皮蛋) with its sulphurous aroma. Fresh-boiled congee is extremely hot.

Allergens in this kitchen

shellfishfishsoyeggpeanut

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
