A taste of Guangzhou

Zhu Zai Ji Shi Fu (Jiangnan Avenue)

珠仔记食府(江南大道)

A three-storey, informal Haizhu restaurant that grew out of a roadside stall and has served Cantonese roast meats for over two decades. The charcoal-roasted goose, using a large black-feathered goose from Qingyuan, is the draw. It is a local place with big tables and no frills.

Why come here

A place worth making time for

Michelin Bib Gourmand (the year of the award in the current guide is not confirmed).

The house favourites

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Charcoal roast goose (古法烧鹅)
  • Zhu Ji steamed chicken (珠记蒸鸡)
  • Blackened barbecued pork (焦香叉烧)
  • Salted pork trotters (盐焗猪手)

What it actually tastes like

Roast goose is served bone-in and chopped, with a layer of fat under the skin; you may see goose blood or offal on nearby menus. Pork trotters are gelatinous.

Allergens in this kitchen

soygluten/wheat

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
