A taste of Guilin and Yangshuo

Chunji Roast Goose (West Street branch)

椿记烧鹅(西街店)

A Guilin-founded roast goose and dim sum chain, going since the late 1990s, with branches across Guilin and one on Yangshuo's West Street. The goose is lacquered and crisp-skinned in the Cantonese manner and the dim sum is made by hand on site, which makes it the most reliable non-fish meal in Yangshuo if beer fish has worn thin.

Why come here

A place worth making time for

No. 3 on Ctrip's Yangshuo must-visit food list, rated 4.1. Reported to have appeared on the Dianping Must-Eat List in 2023, which I could not confirm from Dianping itself.

The house favourites

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Roast goose (烧鹅)
  • Candied taro (拔丝芋头)
  • Crispy sweet-and-sour pork with fruit (脆皮水果咕噜肉)
  • Perilla eel in clay pot (紫苏啫啫黄鳝)

What it actually tastes like

Goose is served on the bone, chopped through, and the skin is the point. The perilla eel is strongly herbal. Otherwise unthreatening.

Allergens in this kitchen

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
