A taste of Guilin and Yangshuo

Xin Guoji Oil Tea (Fubo branch)

新郭记油茶(伏波店)

A Zhuang and Yao oil-tea house, which is the local breakfast tradition most visitors to Guilin never hear about. Tea leaves are pounded and fried in oil, then boiled into a savoury, slightly bitter soup poured over puffed rice, fried peanuts and rice-flour snacks. It is drunk in rounds, and northern Guangxi tradition holds that you should take at least three bowls.

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Oil tea (油茶)
  • Puffed rice and fried peanut toppings (爆米花、炸花生)
  • Zhuang-style rice snacks (糯米小吃)

What it actually tastes like

Oil tea is savoury, oily and genuinely bitter on the first bowl — nothing like sweet tea, and it surprises almost everyone. Peanuts are central, so this is a hard no for a peanut allergy.

Allergens in this kitchen

peanutsesamegluten/wheatsoy

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
