A taste of Hangzhou

Xiao Lao Hun Tun

小老馄饨

A one-room wonton shop down an alley off Ziyang Street near the Drum Tower in the old city, marked only by a yellow flag. The owner retired in 2016, went and learned to make wontons properly, and opened this. Fresh pork, vegetables picked that morning, black sesame and dried shrimp in the broth, and a plate of potstickers on the side: the cheapest and most local breakfast or late lunch in this guide.

Why come here

A place worth making time for

The house favourites

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Fresh pork and vegetable wontons (鲜肉菜馄饨)
  • Potstickers (锅贴)
  • Dried shrimp broth wontons (虾皮馄饨)

What it actually tastes like

Simple and genuinely gentle, the easiest thing in this list for a cautious eater. The only surprise is the dried shrimp in the broth, which gives a strong salty-marine background, and the black sesame, which is unexpected in a savoury filling. No chilli unless you spoon it in.

Allergens in this kitchen

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
