A taste of Hangzhou

Ye Long Jing

野龙井

A handsome old mansion standing among working Longjing tea farms on Longjing Road, in the valley of winding creeks west of the lake. The cooking is country-style Jiangzhe: freshwater fish and shellfish, farm vegetables and comforting Hangzhou standards, served in rooms that balance rustic and polished. Pair it with a morning walking the tea terraces at Longjing village or Meijiawu and it makes the best half-day out of the city centre.

The house favourites

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Fried river shrimp in Sichuan pepper and chilli sauce (椒麻河虾)
  • Fried mochi with sugar and ground peanuts (糖油花生糯米糍)
  • Seasonal freshwater fish (时令河鲜)

What it actually tastes like

The one genuinely numbing dish in this list: the river shrimp come in a Sichuan-pepper and chilli sauce that tingles, which is unusual for Hangzhou. The shrimp are small and eaten shell-on. Elsewhere expect the usual local sweetness, whole fish with bones, and the fried mochi dessert dusted heavily with ground peanut.

Allergens in this kitchen

shellfishfishpeanutsoygluten/wheatsesame

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
