Discover Hangzhou
Southern Song Dynasty Deshou Palace Museum
南宋德寿宫遗址博物馆
An excavated Southern Song imperial palace displayed under a striking modern vermilion building, with projection-mapped reconstructions over the real foundations. Opened 2022 and a genuine phenomenon among Chinese visitors; virtually unknown in English guides.
The story
What makes this place special
Deshou Palace was the residence Emperor Gaozong moved into after abdicating in the Southern Song, when Hangzhou - then Lin'an - was the imperial capital, and it was one of the most important buildings of the dynasty. Nothing of it stood above ground; the site was excavated in the city centre and a museum built over it, which opened on 18 November 2022 and to the general public a few days later. It is the only place in Hangzhou where you can stand on Southern Song imperial foundations, which matters in a city whose Song capital has otherwise vanished entirely.
What you’ll discover
A reconstructed palace hall of red-painted timber in Song proportions standing over the dig, with the excavated foundations - column bases, drains, paving, wall lines - visible beneath glass and from walkways, and galleries explaining the palace, the court that lived in it and the archaeology. There is heavy use of digital reconstruction and projection to show what the vanished building looked like, which is the museum's distinctive feature and the reason it became unexpectedly popular.
A little local insight
Good to know before you go
- This is the missing piece for anyone who wonders where Southern Song Hangzhou went. The city was the imperial capital for 150 years and almost nothing survives; this is the one site that engages with that directly, and it reframes West Lake, Yue Fei and Leifeng Pagoda once you have seen it.
- The reconstructed hall and the digital projections are the draw and they run on a schedule - ask at the entrance for the timings rather than wandering in.
- Book ahead. It has been reservation-only and is popular with domestic visitors, and foreign visitors regularly arrive without a slot.
- It is in the city, not on the lake, a short walk from the Qinghefang old street and Hu Xueyan's residence, and the three together make a good day away from the West Lake crowds.
- Allow about ninety minutes - it is intensive rather than large.
When to come
Weekday, as early in the day as your booking allows. Entirely indoors, so a good rainy-day or hot-afternoon choice. Closed one day a week - check before travelling.
Getting around
Good. A new purpose-built museum with lifts, level or ramped walkways over the excavation, and accessible toilets. The excavated areas are viewed from built platforms rather than at ground level, so there is no rough terrain. Fully usable in a wheelchair.
Worth knowing before you go
The booking quota is the main obstacle - set a reminder for the moment slots release rather than turning up. Price, closing day and exact hours should be reconfirmed on the mini-program before you go.
