Sun Island Snow Sculpture Expo

太阳岛雪博会

The snow counterpart to Ice and Snow World: huge white reliefs and figures packed and carved from snow rather than ice, on a river island park. Daytime viewing in natural light makes it a good complement to the after-dark ice park.

The story

What makes this place special

Sun Island is a river island and park on the Songbei bank that has hosted Harbin's snow sculpture exhibition since 1988, and it runs an international snow sculpture competition each winter. It is the snow half of the festival, distinct from the ice half across the water: the works here are carved by subtraction from packed snow, not assembled from river ice. The island is also a summer park, so much of what you see in winter is a seasonal overlay on permanent gardens.

What you’ll discover

Large white figurative sculptures - heads, animals, narrative reliefs, some three storeys high - standing on open lawns and along park paths. Because snow is opaque and holds fine detail, the carving is far more sculptural and more genuinely artistic than the ice buildings across the river, and the works are meant to be read in daylight; there is no lighting scheme. You walk a long loop between pieces across an exposed island with very little tree cover.

A little local insight

Good to know before you go

  • This is the daytime half and Ice and Snow World is the evening half. Doing Sun Island in the morning and the ice park from mid-afternoon fits both into one day; they are on the same side of the river.
  • The island is big and the sculptures are spread out. Use the internal shuttle from the Songbei Avenue entrance rather than walking the full distance into a headwind - it runs roughly from mid-morning to late afternoon and stops when the light goes.
  • Do not expect ice. Visitors who book Sun Island thinking it is the ice festival are consistently disappointed; the material, the hour and the look are different.
  • Wind is the problem here, not temperature. The island is flat and open and the river funnels wind across it, so a windproof outer layer matters more than extra insulation.
  • Combine with the Siberian Tiger Park, which is next door on the same bank, rather than crossing the river twice.

When to come

January, between about 10:00 and 15:00, while the sun is high enough to put shadows into the carving. The works degrade visibly from February onwards as surfaces slump and refreeze grey.

Getting around

Mostly flat, wide paved or compacted paths, and the shuttle removes most of the distance, so this is the most wheelchair-manageable of the three festival sites in principle. In practice snow and ice cover the paths, and pushing a chair through it is heavy work. Nothing requires stairs to see, and viewing is from ground level. Heated shelter is limited to a few buildings, so the real constraint is cold exposure.

Worth knowing before you go

Sun Island also runs a year-round indoor Ice and Snow Art Museum (哈尔滨太阳岛冰雪艺术馆, around 195-¥200), which is the only way to see ice carving in Harbin in summer.
