A taste of Kunming

Cuifu

翠府

The top of the Kunming market: a fine-dining Yunnan restaurant in the Green Lake area at roughly ten times the price of a bowl of noodles, doing the province's ingredients — matsutake, ham from Xuanwei, highland vegetables, Erhai fish — as a composed menu with service. Second-ranked on Ctrip's Kunming list and the only place in the city at this level.

Why come here

A place worth making time for

No. 2 on Ctrip's Kunming must-visit food list, rated 4.5, at around ¥390 per person. Neither Michelin nor the Black Pearl guide covers Kunming, so there is no star or diamond rating to cite.

The house favourites

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Matsutake courses in season (松茸)
  • Xuanwei cured ham (宣威火腿)
  • Refined steam pot chicken (汽锅鸡)
  • Yunnan highland vegetables (高原时蔬)

What it actually tastes like

Deliberately restrained. The ham is intensely salty by design, like a Chinese jamón, and is served in small quantities for that reason.

Allergens in this kitchen

soygluten/wheatdairyfishtree nutsegg

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
