A taste of Kunming

Fuzhaolou Steam Pot Chicken (Railway Station Jinjiang branch)

福照楼汽锅鸡(火车站锦江店)

A steam pot chicken specialist, which is the Yunnan dish to order after crossing-the-bridge noodles. Qiguoji is cooked in a purpose-made clay pot with a central chimney: no water goes in, the chicken steams in its own condensed juices for hours, and what you get is an almost clear, extremely concentrated broth. Convenient for anyone staying near Kunming railway station.

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Steam pot chicken (汽锅鸡)
  • Steam pot chicken with sanqi or dangshen (三七汽锅鸡)
  • Dai-style grilled fish (香茅草烤鱼)

What it actually tastes like

The chicken is served on the bone, skin on, in a broth with no added water and no salt until you add it — it tastes under-seasoned until you do. Medicinal versions with sanqi root or dangshen taste distinctly bitter and herbal, which is intentional.

Allergens in this kitchen

soygluten/wheatfishsesame

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
