A taste of Kunming

Tiepeng Small Pot Rice Noodles (Tangzixiang main shop)

铁朋小锅米线(塘子巷总店)

Small-pot rice noodles are Kunming's everyday breakfast and the thing locals eat far more often than the ceremonial crossing-the-bridge version: a single portion cooked to order in its own little brass or copper pan with minced pork, pickled greens, chives and chilli, and brought to you still bubbling. This is one of the city's best-known small-pot shops.

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Small pot rice noodles (小锅米线)
  • Small pot rice noodles with pickled greens and pork (酸腌菜肉末小锅米线)
  • Yunnan pickled vegetables (酸腌菜)

What it actually tastes like

The pickled mustard greens give it a sharp sourness that runs through the whole bowl; it is much more aggressive than the crossing-the-bridge version. Chilli oil goes in as standard — ask for 不要辣 if you need it without.

Allergens in this kitchen

soygluten/wheatsesame

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
