Zhenguo Temple
镇国寺
A small UNESCO-listed temple whose Wanfo Hall was built in 963, during the Five Dynasties - one of the oldest wooden buildings standing in China, with original tenth-century sculpture inside.

The story
What makes this place special
Zhenguo Temple stands at Haodong village about 15 km northeast of Pingyao. It was founded in 963 CE, the seventh year of the Tianhui era of the Northern Han, and was originally called Jingcheng Temple before being renamed in the Ming. Its Wanfo Hall is one of the very few surviving timber buildings from the Five Dynasties period anywhere in China, and the eleven painted figures inside it - a Buddha, two disciples, two bodhisattvas, two attendants, two guardians and two donors - are original Five Dynasties work, a group with almost no surviving parallel outside the Dunhuang caves. It is part of the Pingyao World Heritage inscription.
What you’ll discover
A small two-courtyard temple with the Wanfo Hall in the middle of the front court - only three bays wide, modest in scale, with a heavy low-slung roof and a tightly braced timber frame visible inside. The eleven tenth-century figures stand on the altar platform in a single group. Behind are later halls with Ming and Qing sculpture and wall paintings. The visit is short, perhaps 40 minutes, and the significance is entirely in one small building.
A little local insight
Good to know before you go
- Understand before you go that this is a connoisseur's site, not a spectacle. One small hall, eleven figures, and a timber frame from the 960s - if that does not interest you, skip it and spend the time on Shuanglin.
- Look at the bracketing and the roof frame inside the Wanfo Hall. Pre-Song timber construction barely survives in China, and this is one of a handful of chances to stand under it.
- Hire one car for both Zhenguo and Shuanglin in a single outing. They are in opposite directions and doing them as separate trips doubles the cost and the dead time.
- It is rarely busy, with no coach traffic, so you will usually have the hall to yourself - a very different experience from anything inside the walls.
- Separate ticket, not on the Pingyao combined pass.
- Bring a torch; the hall interior is dim and there is no artificial lighting on the sculpture.
When to come
Late morning for light into the hall. Spring and autumn. Avoid winter, when the drive is bleak and the hall is bitterly cold.
Getting around
Small, flat and short, which helps, but the Wanfo Hall is entered up steps over a high threshold with no ramp. A wheelchair can reach the courtyard and see the hall's exterior, and may be able to see the sculpture from the doorway with help, which here is more than a consolation - the hall is small enough that the door view shows most of the group. Easy for a bad knee given the short distances.
Worth knowing before you go
Tiny, and the detour only makes sense if pre-Song timber architecture genuinely interests you. If it does, this and Shuanglin are the reason to spend a second day in Pingyao.
