A taste of Qingdao

Kaihai (Hongdao Fresh Prawn Dumplings)

开海·红岛鲜虾水饺

A Qingdao seafood brand built around Hongdao prawns and the dumplings made from them, with a short menu of local cold dishes and stir-fries alongside. Comfortable, modern rooms and prices that are high for a dumpling shop but reasonable for seafood, which is the trade-off: you pay for certainty rather than hunting a beer house.

Around ¥100 per person≈ US$15Multiple Qingdao branches. Exact addresses unconfirmed.

Why come here

A place worth making time for

No Michelin or Black Pearl distinction found. A widely recommended Qingdao seafood brand named in Chinese food round-ups for its Hongdao prawn dumplings

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Hongdao fresh prawn dumplings (红岛鲜虾水饺)
  • Mackerel dumplings (鲅鱼水饺)
  • Spicy stir-fried clams (辣炒蛤蜊)

What it actually tastes like

Mackerel is oily and strongly fishy by design. Otherwise mild. Prawn dumplings contain whole prawns, so check for tails.

Allergens in this kitchen

shellfishfishgluten/wheatsoysesameegg

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
