A taste of Suzhou

Xi Ding Jia Yan

喜鼎家宴

The newest of Suzhou's three starred restaurants, awarded on its first appearance in the 2026 regional guide. It cooks banquet-register Suzhou food — jia yan means 'family banquet' — in a modern dining room rather than a heritage courtyard.

Why come here

The house favourites

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • The seasonal banquet set, which is the house format (家宴套餐)
  • Whatever the kitchen is running in hairy-crab season (大闸蟹时令菜)

What it actually tastes like

Su banquet cooking is sweet and lightly vinegared, with a lot of freshwater produce — eel, river shrimp, crab, mandarin fish — served bones and shells in.

Allergens in this kitchen

shellfishfishsoygluten/wheatsesameegg

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
