What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Tujia three-in-one pot (土家三下锅)
  • Smoked cured pork (土家腊肉)
  • Blood tofu (血豆腐)
  • Stir-fried wild fern shoots (炒蕨菜)

What it actually tastes like

Xiangxi cooking is sour-and-spicy rather than numbing, and the sourness comes from pickled radish and pickled chilli rather than vinegar. Cured pork is smoked hard and salty, and blood tofu is exactly what it sounds like — set pig's blood pressed with bean curd, firm and iron-tasting. Bones are left in everything.

Allergens in this kitchen

soygluten/wheatsesame

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
