Discover Zhangjiajie

Tianmen Mountain

天门山

A separate massif right above Zhangjiajie city, reached by a 7.5 km cable car from the edge of town and crossed by cliff-edge glass walkways. Its natural arch, Heaven's Gate, sits at the top of 999 stairs above a road of 99 hairpin bends.

The story

What makes this place special

Tianmen Mountain rises directly behind Zhangjiajie city and is a completely separate scenic area from the national forest park - different ticket, different management, different landscape. Its feature is Tianmen Dong, the Heaven's Gate, a natural arch pierced through the cliff at around 1,300 m, approached by a stone stairway of 999 steps. The cable car from the city, 7,455 m long with a vertical rise of about 1,277 m and a single-direction ride of roughly 28 minutes, is one of the longest passenger ropeways in the world. The road beneath it, Tongtian Avenue, has 99 hairpin bends.

What you’ll discover

You go up either by the long cable car from the city or by bus up the 99-bend road, then ride a chain of tunnel escalators inside the mountain to reach the base of the arch, or climb the 999 steps to it. On the summit plateau there are two walking circuits: an east route with more stairs and longer distances, and a west route - glass walkway, Guigu plank path, suspension bridge - that is flatter and has the viewpoints packed closer together. The glass-floored cliff walkways cantilevered off the rock face are the thing most visitors come for.

A little local insight

Good to know before you go

  • Pick a route at the ticket office and stick to it. The A route - cable car up from the city, bus down the 99-bend road - is the least tiring and the most recommended locally. The B route reverses it and means queueing for a numbered cable car ticket at the top before you can descend.
  • The west circuit is the efficient one: glass walkway, Guigu plank path and suspension bridge are close together and it takes about an hour. The east circuit has more stairs, longer walking and most of the tour groups, and can absorb two hours in queues and walking.
  • The 999 steps are optional. Tunnel escalators run up through the mountain to the arch for a small extra charge and are the right answer with children, older travellers or a bad knee - the stairway is steep and has only five rest platforms.
  • Be at the city cable car station at opening. Arriving early can keep the wait near 20 minutes; arriving late in high season can mean two hours, and the mountain has used timed reservations in peak summer with slots clearing within minutes of release.
  • This is a separate ticket and a separate day from the national forest park. Visitors who assume Tianmen Mountain is part of Zhangjiajie park get caught out badly on both time and money.
  • Shoe covers are required on the glass walkways and are handed out at the entrance; there is no charge dispute worth having over them.
  • Cloud sits on this summit often. If the city is clear in the early morning, go that morning rather than saving it for later in the trip.

When to come

First cable car of the day, both for the queue and because the summit clouds over as the day warms. April to June and September to November; the summit is several degrees colder than the city and the walkways close in ice.

Getting around

Mixed, and better than it looks if you plan it. The cable car is step-free into the cabin, the tunnel escalators replace the 999 steps entirely, and the west circuit's plank and glass walkways are largely level - a wheelchair can do a meaningful part of the summit with a helper, and a bad knee can see the arch and the glass walkways without a serious climb. Not accessible: the 999 steps, the east circuit's stair sections, and the arch's upper viewing level. Glass walkways are narrow and two-way, so a chair creates a bottleneck at busy times; go early.

Worth knowing before you go

This is a different ticket and a different mountain from the National Forest Park - plan it as its own day. The glass skywalks charge a small extra fee for shoe covers, payable on the spot.
