The character of the place

Why stay here

A 119-room tower on the Liangma River in the Embassy District, interiors by Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel in the firm's usual dark wood, bronze and marble. It sits in its own landscaped garden on the site of the former Italian embassy compound, with a restored 1970s villa in the grounds used as a bar.

The best-built modern luxury hotel in Beijing and the one with the lowest guest-complaint rate. Two Michelin Keys. Rooms are large for the city at roughly 55-62 square metres entry level, the riverfront position gives you actual trees and water out the window, and Sanlitun's restaurants and bars are a short walk rather than a taxi.

Make the stay your own

Rooms worth asking for

A southeast corner room. Forbes Travel Guide and repeat guests both single these out for light and the view down the Liangma; the inward-facing rooms lose most of what you are paying for.

Note the exact room or suite name before opening the booking provider, along with any connecting-room, step-free access or celebration requests.

At the table

Dining & the evening ahead

Il Ristorante Niko Romito for Italian, Bvlgari Bar, and a Chinese restaurant. The Italian kitchen is the serious one.

Request restaurant availability alongside your stay. Tasting menus, private dining and dietary arrangements should be confirmed separately.

Time for yourself

Spa, pool & wellbeing

A full Bvlgari spa with a 25-metre pool clad in green glass mosaic. Genuinely good, and the pool is the best-looking one in the city.

Ask which facilities are included with your room, whether treatments require advance reservations, and whether any seasonal closures affect your stay.

Before you decide

Breakfast is the weak point and comes up repeatedly: it is served in a small lounge that gets crowded, and the food does not match the rest of the hotel. Beds run very soft and the pillow menu is not offered proactively, so ask on arrival rather than discovering it at checkout. The hotel hosts a lot of brand and fashion events, and when one is on, the public areas are loud and not yours. The location is excellent for eating and drinking and poor for sightseeing.

Location. Embassy District, Chaoyang, on the Liangma River. Ten minutes' walk to Taikoo Li Sanlitun; 25-35 minutes to the Forbidden City.

Prices are indicative, not live availability. Confirm the total including taxes, meals, transfers and cancellation terms on the provider’s checkout before committing.
