Hotel Courtyard at Mandarin Oriental Qianmen, Beijing
Why stay here
Not a hotel building but 42 restored courtyard houses scattered through the Caochang hutong lanes south of Qianmen, a quarter laid out roughly 600 years ago. Houses run from about 110 to 491 square metres and each has its own walled courtyard; you reach your front door down a working residential alley. Address is No. 1 Caochang Alley 10, Dongcheng.
It is the only property in Beijing where the accommodation is the old city rather than a view of it, and it is executed to Mandarin Oriental's standard rather than a boutique's. The Michelin Guide gives it three Keys, the only three-Key hotel in Beijing, and it sits on The World's 50 Best Hotels list. Walking distance to Tiananmen and the Forbidden City in a city where that normally means a tower on a six-lane road.

Rooms worth asking for
One of the larger multi-building courtyard houses rather than the smallest category. The smallest houses are still generous, but the point of the place is having a courtyard you can eat breakfast in, and the entry houses give you the least of it.
Note the exact room or suite name before opening the booking provider, along with any connecting-room, step-free access or celebration requests.
Dining & the evening ahead
Yan Garden for Cantonese and Chaozhou cooking; TIAO, a two-floor cocktail bar occupying one of the lanes; Maple Lounge for tea. Guest opinion rates the Italian kitchen above the Chinese one, which is unusual for a hotel of this type in Beijing.
Request restaurant availability alongside your stay. Tasting menus, private dining and dietary arrangements should be confirmed separately.
Spa, pool & wellbeing
A courtyard spa working from Chinese wellness practice, including a gong bath. Worth booking, but it is not the reason you are here.
Ask which facilities are included with your room, whether treatments require advance reservations, and whether any seasonal closures affect your stay.

By a wide margin the most expensive room night in Beijing, and at ¥11,000-plus some guests have found the service style cloying rather than polished. Because these are genuinely old single-storey houses in a hutong, guests report insects at night in warm months and occasional gaps in deep cleaning and fittings that a sealed tower would not have. The lanes are public, so there is street noise and foot traffic outside your gate, and getting luggage in involves a walk. Reviews are glowing on average but the sample is small and recent.
Location. Caochang hutong, Dongcheng, immediately south of Qianmen and Tiananmen Square. Qianmen and Zhushikou subway stations are both close.
