The character of the place

Why stay here

An all-suite hotel just off Wangfujing, open since 1989 and rebuilt between 2015 and 2017 in a renovation costing about 890 million yuan. The work cut the room count from 525 to 230 and converted every unit to a suite; the entry category is a 60-square-metre Superior Suite and the standard room averages about 65 square metres, the largest standard accommodation in the city.

If you want space and an old-school Peninsula operation, this is it. The renovation left the smallest room here bigger than most suites elsewhere in Beijing, service is the long-tenured kind, and the position between Wangfujing and the Forbidden City is the most walkable of the international hotels. One Michelin Key.

Every room is a suite with a separate sitting area, and a Rolls-Royce or BMW fleet with the Peninsula's usual house-car service. On a trip where you are moving between the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven and the Great Wall, having the hotel's own cars rather than hired vans changes the day.

Make the stay your own

Rooms worth asking for

A Grand Premier Suite at 93-102 square metres. There are 26 of them and they are the only category here that is clearly a step up rather than a slightly larger version of the same room.

Note the exact room or suite name before opening the booking provider, along with any connecting-room, step-free access or celebration requests.

At the table

Dining & the evening ahead

Two restaurants, Peninsula afternoon tea in the lobby under Qin Feng's ink paintings, and a shopping arcade with about 40 designer boutiques attached. The arcade is more of a draw than the restaurants.

Request restaurant availability alongside your stay. Tasting menus, private dining and dietary arrangements should be confirmed separately.

Time for yourself

Spa, pool & wellbeing

A full-service spa with an indoor heated pool. Fine; not the reason to book.

Ask which facilities are included with your room, whether treatments require advance reservations, and whether any seasonal closures affect your stay.

Before you decide

Independent reviews of the post-renovation hotel are thin, and most of what is written about it traces back to the hotel's own press material. The renovation is now nearly a decade old. The building is a 1980s block and the exterior and public circulation still read that way whatever was done inside. The all-suite format means you are paying for a sitting room whether you want one or not, and the arcade of boutiques running through the ground floor makes the lobby feel semi-public.

Location. Jinyu Hutong, Dongcheng, one block off Wangfujing. A 15-20 minute walk to the Forbidden City.

Prices are indicative, not live availability. Confirm the total including taxes, meals, transfers and cancellation terms on the provider’s checkout before committing.
