Why stay here
A 171-room hotel on Jinyu Hutong in Dongcheng, a block from Wangfujing, with a purpose-built courtyard compound at the rear holding a small number of siheyuan-style units with their own street entrance. The site is near the former Beijing residence of Li Hongzhang, reportedly the first Chinese guest at the Waldorf Astoria in New York.
It gives you a courtyard stay with a major international brand behind it and the Forbidden City within walking distance, which is a combination almost nothing else in Beijing offers at this price. One Michelin Key. It is also the most consistently praised of the Wangfujing cluster on service.
The Hutong Courtyard Studios: three studios and one family suite in the rear compound, entered from the lane rather than through the hotel lobby, so you get a courtyard address with 24-hour hotel backing. There are only four, and they book out months ahead.
Rooms worth asking for
A Hutong Courtyard Studio if you can get one. Failing that, one of the nine rooms with a furnished terrace. The standard tower rooms are the least interesting thing here.
Note the exact room or suite name before opening the booking provider, along with any connecting-room, step-free access or celebration requests.
Dining & the evening ahead
Brasserie 1893, a Chinese restaurant, and the Waldorf's rooftop bar. The breakfast buffet gets unusually strong guest reviews; dinner gets called overpriced by some.
Request restaurant availability alongside your stay. Tasting menus, private dining and dietary arrangements should be confirmed separately.
Spa, pool & wellbeing
The spa is one of the most consistently praised parts of the hotel in recent guest reviews, which is rare. Worth booking.
Ask which facilities are included with your room, whether treatments require advance reservations, and whether any seasonal closures affect your stay.

The tower rooms opened in 2014 and recent reviewers mention dated furnishings and maintenance niggles; the courtyard units are the part of the hotel that holds up. In-house dining is called overpriced often enough to be a pattern. The courtyard compound is purpose-built rather than a restored historic siheyuan, so it is a good replica, not the real thing, and Mandarin Oriental Qianmen does the real thing for much more money. Jinyu Hutong itself is a traffic street, not a quiet lane.
Location. Jinyu Hutong, Dongcheng, off Wangfujing. Walking distance to the Forbidden City and Tiananmen.
