Why stay here
A small hotel in a protected historic house on Nanshizi Street in Gusu district, a few minutes from Pingjiang Road, opened in 2013 and refurbished in 2017. The building was a residence of the Pan family and is named for Pan Zuyin, the Qing scholar who placed third in the imperial examinations, the rank known as tanhua. The conversion kept the courtyards and original fabric rather than gutting them.
It is the only accommodation in Suzhou that puts you inside a protected scholar's house in the old city, within walking distance of Pingjiang Road and the Humble Administrator's Garden. For a traveller who would rather have two nights in a real courtyard than four in a lake resort, it is the answer, and it costs a fraction of the brands.

Rooms worth asking for
A courtyard-facing room in the original house rather than one in the rear additions. Ask specifically; the difference is large and the booking sites do not make it clear.

This is a boutique inn, not a luxury hotel, and it should not be judged against the Four Seasons: no spa, no pool, limited English, small bathrooms, and Chinese-domestic service conventions. Room counts published for it disagree badly, 20 on the Chinese booking platforms and 50-plus on one TripAdvisor description, which suggests the inventory has changed or includes adjacent buildings. Blossom Hill is now part of a large Chinese hospitality group and quality varies sharply between its properties, so what is true here is not true of the brand. A protected historic building also means thin walls, old plumbing and noise from the lane.
