Why stay here
178 rooms and suites on the site of the old Bamboo Grove Hotel, just south of the old city walls near the Suzhou moat, reopened under Kimpton after a full rebuild. The Michelin Guide's own review calls the rooms more luxurious than the Kimpton norm, and the property keeps the mature gardens and water of its predecessor.
It is the only hotel in Suzhou that holds a MICHELIN Key, and it is the best-located of the good hotels: a short walk or a few minutes by car to the Master of the Nets Garden, Panmen and the old city lanes. For a visitor who wants to walk out into Suzhou rather than drive to it, this is the pick.
One MICHELIN Key, the only one awarded to any hotel in Suzhou, in a city where Hangzhou has a two-Key hotel and Shanghai has five. On the one objective measure available, this is Suzhou's best hotel.
Rooms worth asking for
A suite or a garden-facing room. The gardens are the inherited asset here and a room looking at them is worth the step up.
Note the exact room or suite name before opening the booking provider, along with any connecting-room, step-free access or celebration requests.
Dining & the evening ahead
Hotel restaurants and a bar in the Kimpton style, including the brand's evening social hour. Pleasant, not a destination.
Request restaurant availability alongside your stay. Tasting menus, private dining and dietary arrangements should be confirmed separately.
Spa, pool & wellbeing
A heated indoor pool and a well-equipped gym with a wellness programme, which Michelin singles out. Not a full destination spa.
Ask which facilities are included with your room, whether treatments require advance reservations, and whether any seasonal closures affect your stay.

Kimpton is a lifestyle brand, not a luxury one, and this is a very good four-and-a-half-star hotel rather than a five-star: expect design and energy rather than butlers, and expect a bar with music in the lobby. Its Key is one Key, which in Michelin's scale is 'a very special stay', the entry rung. The site's name trades on the reputation of the old Bamboo Grove Hotel, which was a different and much older property. It is the cheapest hotel on this list by a wide margin, and that is the honest reading of where Suzhou's hotel market sits.
Location. South of the old city near the moat and Zhuhui Road. Walkable to the Master of the Nets Garden and Panmen; 10 minutes to Pingjiang Road.
