Why stay here
A large low-rise hotel built in Chinese palace style beside Panmen, the surviving water gate in Suzhou's old city wall, with its own classical garden, ponds and pavilions, and the Ruiguang Pagoda rising behind it. It is the only international-brand hotel physically inside the old walled city with a garden of its own.
For the setting, and only for the setting. You wake up inside the old city with a Song-dynasty pagoda over the garden wall and the city moat at the end of the lane, which no newer hotel in Suzhou can give you at any price.

Rooms worth asking for
A refurbished Executive Premier room, and ask explicitly which wing and which renovation phase it is in. Do not book a standard room sight unseen.

Chinese and all-day dining restaurants on site. Dated and not a reason to stay in.

This is the clearest example of a reputation outliving a standard. The hotel has been renovating in stages since at least 2016, and reviewers from 2022 onwards still describe major works in progress, a relocated lobby, a club wing closed since 2019, and a pool and lounger area needing refurbishment. The most recent reviews praise the architecture and call the infrastructure dated and in need of a refresh. It holds no Michelin Keys and does not appear in Michelin's Suzhou list at all. We could not confirm a current room count. Book it for the garden and the gate, go in expecting a three-and-a-half-star room behind a five-star facade, and do not pay five-star money for it.
Location. Panmen, Gusu district, inside the old city walls at the southwest corner. Walk to Panmen and the moat; 15-20 minutes by car to Pingjiang Road.
