A taste of Xiamen

Fleurs et Festin (Liaohua Qingyu)

蓼花卿语

A Chaoshan (Teochew) restaurant in a three-storey historic building on Liaohua Road near Zhongshan Park. A few tables sit on the ground floor while upstairs private rooms carry a minimum spend. The kitchen is staffed by Chaoshan natives and is known for cold-marinated (lu) dishes and fresh seafood, so it makes a good contrast to Xiamen's own Minnan food.

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Marinated goose and goose feet (卤水鹅 / 老鹅掌)
  • Marinated pig-liver powder dish (粉肝)
  • Fresh seafood by weight (时令海鲜)

What it actually tastes like

Chaoshan marinades are soy-sweet and spiced, with fish sauce, offal and cold-served seafood common. Allergen coverage here is a general guess from the cuisine, not from the menu: Teochew kitchens may use peanut and sesame, so ask before ordering if you have a nut allergy.

Allergens in this kitchen

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
