A taste of Xiamen

Da Tong Shao Jiu Lang

大同烧酒廊

A bustling old-town place for shao jiu pei, the Minnan term for small plates eaten with alcohol. Run by a couple for over ten years, seafood-forward with meat and offal too. Good for an evening drink-and-snack session.

A place worth making time for

The house favourites

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Blanched octopus with secret dip (白灼章鱼)
  • Pork kidney in Sichuan pepper sauce (花椒腰花)

What it actually tastes like

Offal and numbing Sichuan pepper in some plates; raw or lightly cooked seafood possible. Dip ingredients are unknown (the shop calls it secret), so ask about peanut.

Allergens in this kitchen

shellfishfishsoy

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
