A taste of Zhangjiajie

Mao's Small Restaurant

毛氏小馆·特色菜

A small Wulingyuan restaurant whose draw is a grilled whole fish in a secret sauce, cooked on a tray over a burner at the table and topped up with vegetables as you go. A good alternative on the second or third night when another pot of cured pork is unappealing.

The house favourites

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Grilled fish in house sauce (秘制酱料烤鱼)
  • Hunan-style stir-fried pork (小炒肉)
  • Sour-bean minced pork (酸豆角炒肉末)

What it actually tastes like

The grilled fish arrives whole, head on, and you eat around the bones. Sour beans are aggressively pickled. Chilli heat is Hunanese — plain hot, not numbing.

Allergens in this kitchen

fishsoygluten/wheatsesame

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
