A taste of Zhangjiajie

Weixiangyuan Tujia Private Kitchen

味湘源食府土家私房菜

The highest-rated Tujia private kitchen on Ctrip's Zhangjiajie list, in the city rather than at the park gate. Small, home-style and cooked to order, which makes it the best bet for an evening meal on the night you arrive or before an early train out.

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Wind-cured Tujia pork (土家风味腊肉)
  • Three-in-one pot (三下锅)
  • Rock-ear mushroom stewed chicken (岩耳炖鸡)

What it actually tastes like

Rock ear is a cliff-grown fungus, slippery and black, prized locally and expensive — it tastes mostly of the broth. Cured pork is very salty. Sour-spicy throughout.

Allergens in this kitchen

soygluten/wheatsesame

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
