A taste of Zhangjiajie

Zhaizi Li Bobo Cai, Xiangxi Mountain Food (Charming Xiangxi branch)

寨子里的钵钵菜·湘西山里菜(魅力湘西店)

A themed Xiangxi mountain-food restaurant beside the Charming Xiangxi show theatre in Wulingyuan, doing bobocai — skewered food cooked and then served sitting in a bowl of chilli-and-sesame broth — plus free-range chicken dishes. It is built for the coach trade, which means fast service before the evening show and a menu that explains itself.

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Signature fighting chicken (招牌战斗鸡)
  • Bobocai skewers in chilli broth (钵钵菜)
  • Xiangxi cured meat (湘西腊味)

What it actually tastes like

Bobocai broth is heavy on sesame oil and chilli and is served cool or at room temperature, which surprises people. The free-range chicken is chopped through the bone. Offal skewers sit alongside the vegetable ones on the same rack.

Allergens in this kitchen

sesamesoypeanutgluten/wheat

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
